Field Notes

Farm under the same family's ownership since 1742. Property consists of Colonial House (1815); English style barn , 1811(drive through with bays on each side) with additions for cows, box stalls, and bull pen; "Motorhouse"; Milk house/ice house (1800s); horse barn (1800s); and tobacco barn with shop shed addition (1800s). Property has 13 acres of west side of Cherry Brook Road (CT. Route 179) with extensive stream frontage and 60 acres on east side of road consisting of open meadows and timber. Buildings are in need of extensive repairs but retain most of their original features. Elderly family owners sell Christmas trees and timber but are faced with disposing of the property for development unless development rights are sold. Town of Canton made an offer (since withdrawn) to do this but owners rejected the Town's terms as too restrictive to continue the farm as an agricultural operation. Disposition of farm and buildings uncertain as of now - 2007.
