Historic Significance

This barn is associated with the Caleb Smith House, a Greek Revival structure which has been heavily remodeled in the last decade of the 20th century.  The house faces the Connecticut River and is set far off the road.  The barn is set behind the house and is accessible only by a long driveway.  Caleb Smith was a shipbuilder and the house was owned by the Smith family for much of the 19th and 20th centuries.  The property was the site of a infamous murder in the early 20th century.  One of Caleb’s sons murdered his brother and disposed of the body in the river.  The brother escaped and was caught many months later.

The barn is currently used for chickens and storage.

Field Notes

This English Style bank barn features a gable roof, vertical siding and cupola on roof. The exposed basement features field stone and Haddam Neck granite. A small one-story addition wraps around the exposed basement level on the west elevation.
