Field Notes

Built in the 19th century probably with parts from an older building on the Ackeley Family property, it was used still being used for horses in the 1970s. Unfortunately an adjacent wetland had been excavated for a pond and the dredged material subsided against the sills and the building began to decay from the (below) ground up. In 1994 we elevated the structure (by an average of two feet), dug down to the original dry stone foundation and constructed a new, taller foundation of lolly columns and concrete block. Laid a new set of sills on that and laid up new post section to tie the building to its new foundation. It is a 28 x 38 English barn that we have refinished as a meeting or entertainment space. The hay mow was opened on either side with dormers to make a yoga/meditation space that doubles as a spare bedroom.
